How can you become an effective advocate for intellectual freedom and patron privacy while maintaining a positive relationship with diverse elements of your community?

The very best approach is to assume a proactive role in every library function, from collection development to community outreach. This engaged approach helps you understand why people challenge library materials and how to effectively respond to challenges while building a freedom-friendly community of users.

Amy Crump, Director of the Marshall Public Library in Marshall, Missouri, will lead several workshops for NEKLS library trustees and staff that address these issues in a practical way.

Amy has been the Director of the Marshall Public Library in Marshall, Missouri, since August 2004. She received her MLS degree from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Amy faced her first book challenge in 2006, in a case that received national press coverage. Amy is a dynamic presenter and an enthusiastic storyteller. She home schools her three daughters and participates in numerous civic activities. Amy and her family reside in Marshall, where her husband is editor of the local paper.

The workshops will be held July 22-25, with a choice of three evening sessions and one afternoon session to accommodate trustees’ busy schedules. Sessions are all the same, so choose ONE time and place which is convenient for you. Participation is free and includes a light meal.
