The new NEKLS public library accreditation program is now underway, and all NEKLS public libraries are encouraged to participate. Libraries will soon be receiving an application packet for accreditation for the three-year period beginning January 1, 2012. Application forms are also available on the NEKLS web site at  http://www.nekls.org/nekls-services/forms-reports-library/.

Most accreditation standards are continued with minor clarifications from 2011. Principal changes include:

  • Clarification of library board governance authority.
  • An orientation for all new library trustees.
  • Purchase of e-books and other downloadable e-content.
  • Recommendations for increased Internet bandwidth.
  • Clarification of library staffing requirements.
  • An increase of 6% in library director salaries from the levels in the 2009-2011 standards.
  • All libraries are asked to provide policies and plans in print or electronic format.
The library development grants provided to eligible accredited libraries have been increased by a minimum of 4% in 2012. In addition a nominal “Accreditation Grant” will be provided to libraries such as district libraries that are not eligible for a library development grant.
