Kan-ed 2.0 Update

Charmine Chambers, Kan-ed Network Access Manager, provided us with an update to the Kan-ed 2.0 project this week.  We are the primary contact for some of the NEKLS libraries, while others will communicate directly with Kan-ed.

Charmine shared the following information, which I want to pass along:

  • For the sites getting 2 T-1s (3 mg) – These libraries can expect a “Confirmation of Service Order” that needs to be signed and returned to AT&T.  The order will not process with AT&T until they have received the signed Confirmation order.
  • Libraries should expect to receive multiple visits from technicians – from your local carrier, as well as AT&T.  They will be installing the demarc, the circuit and the router.  The NEKLS Technology staff are available to answer questions and can be on-site when the technician visits.
  • Libraries will receive a router from the Kan-ed Network Operations Center that will be shipped directly to the site.  Libraries will not need to install it, just keep it safe.  AT&T will contact the primary technical contact to set up a time to come and install the router.
  • For those libraries without in-house or contracted Technical support, we recommend that libraries let Kan-ed install the circuit and router, but let NEKLS Technical staff complete the process.  NEKLS can help libraries transition their local area networks over to the new circuit.  At that time, we can decide how the new T-1 will be used, for example for wireless service.
  • Each library will be responsible for issuing the disconnection request to their current provider, if appropriate.  This will ensure that you have continuous Internet coverage.
  • The time line for installation starts now!  Kan-ed has begun processing orders and once an order is sent to AT&T, the time line will be roughly 45-60 days for installation of the circuit and router.  If everything goes smoothly, the verified T-1 circuits should all be installed by the end of July.
  • Once the circuit is installed and in use, the Kan-ed Network Operations Center number is 866-984-3662 for trouble calls.

What is a demarc?

According to Wikipedia, Demarc is a term from the telephone industry – it refers to the point at which the telephone company network ends and connects to the wiring at the customer premises.

AT&T provided some Demarc considerations and recommendations (.pdf).  Again, NEKLS will help with this!
