Many libraries have recently received a bill for “LYRASIS Membership Dues.” This is what you need to know about that:
1. What’s LYRASIS? It is a service organization that provides training and technology and group purchasing services for libraries. It is similar to BCR, which provided those services to Kansas Libraries for many years, and went out of business last year.
2. Why are you getting a bill? The State Library of Kansas will not be continuing a statewide contract with LYRASIS. Instead the State Library will be receiving needed services from another agency named AMIGOS. Therefore LYRASIS is sending these bills to solicit membership by individual libraries.
3. What do I do with these bills? There may be some large and/or specialized libraries that wish to join LYRASIS. However, most small and medium size libraries will not benefit from membership. Unless you are sure that you do wish to join LYRASIS, I recommend that you discard this bill and not pay it. If you have any questions, contact me at 1-888-296-6963 or at jminges@nekls.org .
