Bibliographic Conversion Service

Diana Weaver, NEKLS Technical Services Librarian, will help a library prepare for a retrospective conversion project by providing training regarding material processing, weeding, shelf list preparation, options for retrospective conversion, and use of conversion software.

NEKLS will assist libraries to seek funding for retrospective conversion projects.

At the completion of the retrospective conversion process, Diana will prepare the records for export into a local automation system and the Kansas Library Catalog.

OCLC CatExpress Copy Cataloging Service

NEKLS has adopted this solution to the problem of providing accurate cataloging and loading records into the Kansas Library Catalog (KLC). NEKLS provides subsidized access to this source of copy cataloging records. The library will be able to search the extensive OCLC data base of high quality cataloging records, attach their holdings to the appropriate record, and automatically download the record into their local automation system and the Kansas Library Catalog.

Libraries may catalog up to 2,000 items annually at 20 cents per record. NEKLS will pay the remaining portion of the fee. Additional items may be cataloged on CatExpress at a higher cost. Contact Diana Weaver for more information and training.

Public libraries and school libraries in school districts with only one high school may participate in this program at the subsidized rate.

Original Cataloging Service

The Catalog Consultant service will provide an experienced librarian to catalog unique materials in your collection for which catalog records are not available in OCLC or other major bibliographic databases. Those are most likely to be limited numbers of local history, genealogical and self-published books or other items. This service will not catalog any items for which automated cataloging records are available. There will be no cost to a member library for this service, but availability will be dependent upon demand and available funding. The consultant available to provide cataloging service is Margaret Knecht; her resume and contact information are provided below.

Margaret Knecht

Experience:

I have been a librarian at the Kansas State Historical Society since 1974 and have been performing original cataloging since then, as well as other duties. Since 1976 my cataloging assignment has been Kansas related histories plus other publications. I am familiar with the standard cataloging tools, such as AACRIIr, LCSH, MARC21, and DDC. My automated cataloging experience has been with OCLC CatME and Innovative Interfaces International.

Schedule:

I am available on weekends and an occasional weekday. Some evenings may also be possible.
