As we look ahead to July and our annual NEKLS Trustee Training week, I would like to encourage directors and boards to sign up for one of the four sessions we will be offering around the system, July 21-24. We are again offering three evening sessions and one daytime session this year, for the convenience of your trustees. All sessions will begin with a boxed meal and some time for relaxed and informal conversation among attendees. The session schedule is below.

  • Tuesday, July 21: 5:30-8:00 pm, Leavenworth Public Library, 417 Spruce, Leavenworth, 66048
  • Wednesday, July 22: 5:30-8:00 pm, Corning City Library and Community Building, 6221 5th Street, Corning, 66417
  • Thursday, July 23: 5:30-8:00 pm, Wellsville City Library, 115 W. 6th Street, Wellsville, 66092
  • Friday, July 24: 12:30-3:00 pm, Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library, 1515 SW 10th Street, Topeka  66604

This year, NEKLS has committed to a “back to basics” program that will focus on these goals:

  1. Reviewing the authority of the library board (statutory, budgetary and political).
  2. Defining the roles and responsibilities of  the officers and members of the board.
  3. Spotlighting the key functions of the library board in supporting the library’s mission.
  4. Identifying and recruiting potential new library board members from the community.

NEKLS Director, Jim Minges, is partnering with members of the Kansas Library Trustee Association (KLTA) for these presentations. The sessions will be highly interactive, so bring your questions and prepare for a lively discussion of your roles and responsibilities.

Remember, you only need attend ONE session. The same material will be covered at each session.  Choose the date and location that is most convenient for you to attend.  We hope to see a record turnout this year.
