Looking for a great professional development opportunity that’s cost effective and in-state? The Public Library Section Fall Retreat, “We Can Do It! Thriving in Tough Times,” is scheduled for October 1-2 at the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita, featuring keynote Toni Boyles.
Every other year the Public Library Section of the Kansas Library Association organizes a Fall Retreat for librarians from across the state. This year, the focus is on helping libraries and librarians thrive in tough economic times, with an emphasis Friday on “Human Resource Management in Tough Times” with Toni Boyles. In 2007, we heard Dr. Mary Bushing speak about “Project Management for Today” and in 2005, we had an “Extreme Library Makeover” retreat with a focus on building management and marketing.
Also on this year’s agenda, we will hear a library story about Thriving in Tough Times from Cynthia Berner Harris, Director of the Wichita Public Library and an update on the Kansas Library Association with past president Laura Loveless. Â Two panel discussions are planned, one on No Cost and Low Cost Solutions and one on Helping Job Seekers.
There will also be plenty of time to network with professionals and peers from across Kansas…and a tour of the new Andover Public Library.
The Retreat is scheduled for Thur., Oct. 1 and Fri., Oct. 2, with registration beginning at 11 a.m. at the Spiritual Life Center in Wichita, KS. Registration is $90 for KLA-PLA members and $130 for non-members and you can become a PLS member for just $10 (before you register, thus saving yourself some money). Registration price includes all meals at the Spiritual Life Center’s wonderful cafeteria. Lodging is a bargain at $40 for a shared room with twin beds, while the cost of a single room is $55. Interested? Join PLS and register today at the Kansas Library Association site.
As the past chair of this great professional organization, I extend a personal invitation to join us in Wichita!
