SUMMARY:2023 Trustee Training
DESCRIPTION:Join us Saturday morning\, online\, on June 3rd at 10 a.m. for the NEKLS 2023 Trustee Training. Our presenter will be Robin Newell and she will be discussing library policy development and management. Register to attend the Zoom workshop here: https://kslib.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJ0tdu2hrDIrGNH75Q33x9znq8yT7Hz2Xt9t \n\n\n\nWorkshop Description\n\n\n\nThis workshop will include the process for the development and management of library policies in three different areas – outward facing (for the government of the library)\, inward facing (for the government of staff) and self (policies for the board). The workshop will be broken into 20-minute segments with a five-minute break between each segment. Time will be allowed for questions pertaining to the content that is being presented. If there are additional areas that participants would like to discuss with the presenter as a whole\, time will be made available at the end of the presentation. \n\n\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\n\nRobin Newell’s library career spanned twenty-four years in Georgia\, Nebraska and Kansas.  Newell served as the President of the Nebraska\, Kansas and Mountain Plains Library Associations and attended and mentored at both the Nebraska Library Leadership Institute and the Mountain Plains Library Leadership Institute and is an alumnus of the first American Library Leadership Institute in 2013. She is the incoming president of the Lillian Perdido Bay Optimist Club and served as the President of the Emporia\, Kansas Rotary Club and Papillion\, Nebraska and Emporia\, Kansas Lions Club. DESCRIPTION:Please join the Kansas Regional Library Systems on Thursday\, June 15\, 2023 at 1:30 PM via Zoom for another helping of the After-lunch Course. \n\n\n\nWhy Patron Privacy Matters and How You Can Protect It            \n\n\n\n\nWhy privacy matters\, even if you have nothing to hide (ethical foundation for protecting (patron privacy).\n\n\n\nWhat does the law require? (legal foundation for protecting patron privacy)\n\n\n\nTypical threats to library patron privacy (library patrons\, fund-raising efforts\, First Amendment“audits\,” requests from law enforcement\, self-service hold shelves\, vendors\, etc.)\n\n\n\nWhat you can do to protect privacy? (practical advice about writing policy and procedures\,training staff and board members\, educating patrons\, modifying library operations\, using privacy screens\, etc.)\n\n\n\nWhere to get help? Intellectual Freedom Manual\, ALA Office for Intellectual Freedom website (free resources)\, Sample handouts and procedures (free resources)\n\n\n\n\nProfessor Trina Magi is a reference and instruction librarian at Howe Memorial Library\, University of Vermont. Trina has spoken and written widely about privacy and libraries and was editor of the 9th edition of the ALA Intellectual Freedom Manual and assistant editor of the 10th edition. She has led or been a member of intellectual freedom committees at the state\, regional\, and national levels\, and played a leadership role in raising awareness about the privacy implications of the USA PATRIOT Act\, working with then-Congressman Bernie Sanders to introduce the Freedom to Read Protection Act.
