Apply by February 12, 2019 to attend this FREE hands-on, space science-themed workshop that will provide activities and content to prepare public library staff for the 2019 Summer Reading program, A Universe of Stories.

 The workshop facilitators include NASA @ My Library team members from the Space Science Institute and the Lunar and Planetary Institute.

  • Learn how to conduct a dozen space science activities geared for children and teens
  • Discover resources to connect to NASA science and missions
  • Network with others facilitating science and technology programs, and
  • Connect to the broader online community through the STAR Library Network.

The workshop will begin on February 26 at 12:30pm at Baker Wetlands Discovery Center, and include a Night Sky Viewing that evening (weather permitting). It will conclude at 3pm on February 27. There is no fee for the workshop and most meals will be provided.

School Library Grants

School Library Grants

NEKLS Staff and Executive Board are pleased to announce a new grant program exclusively for NEKLS school library members. We have allocated up to $50,000 to fund competitive collection development grants during the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years.

Applications require two parts:

  • Application Form
  • Administrator’s Certification

Both parts of the application will be completed online (at the links listed in the Program Description). Applications are due by 5pm (Central) on February 22, 2019.

Sensory storytime techniques make programs more beneficial for all participants, regardless of ability and skill levels. Participants can expect to learn tips on storytime, sensory storytime and inclusion.

Our speaker, Sherry Norfolk, will present an interactive workshop, Sensory Storytime for All. If you attended any of the seven Kansas Summer Library Program Workshops in 2017, you may remember Sherry as a dynamic and knowledgeable presenter from St. Louis.

Participants will experience a wide variety of sensory storytime strategies, learn ways to make all library programs more inclusive and leave with at least one storytime ready to go, including props!

9:30-10am – registration and refreshments

10am-noon – Sensory Storytimes, Part 1

noon-1pm – lunch buffet

1-3pm – Sensory Storytimes, Part 2

3-4pm – optional work session (practice new techniques, swap ideas, network)

For Directors Institute, Fall 2018 Edition, we have two key presentations:

  • “Security, Privacy and the Law” by Attorney Danielle Davey of Sloan Law Firm
  • “Effective Time Management for Busy Library Staff” by Brenda Hough, author of Crash Course in Time Management for Library Staff

You are encouraged to submit questions for both presenters. Email Anna Foote or include your questions on your registration form (link below).

Law question examples might include security cameras and records retention and board/administration responsibility for staff safety.

Time management questions might include topics like setting priorities, dealing with procrastination or managing to-do lists.

Submit your questions by Friday, September 14.
