Readers’ Advisory: Building Beyond the Basics

04/27/2023 @ 10:00 am 11:00 am

According to Diana Tixier Herald, author of Genreflecting, readers’ advisory is: “the act of putting people together with the books they love”. How do you connect people with titles that will be a great fit?

In this workshop, our presenter, Molly Wetta, will provide an advanced readers’ advisory (RA) training for library professionals. In this presentation we will cover:

  • Tips and guidance from trainings by readers’ advisory experts Joyce Saricks and Nancy Pearl,
  • Advanced readers’ advisory training through the lens of How to Read Now by Elaine Castillo,
  • Suggestions for practical habits to build readers’ advisory skills.

A follow-up discussion will be available on May 11 at 10:00 a.m. over Zoom. In this second webinar, participants will be able to refine RA skills – learning from their peers – in a casual small group atmosphere.

This readers’ advisory training series is presented by Topeka & Shawnee County Public Library and Northeast Kansas Library System.

About the Presenter

Molly Wetta is the Library Services Manager for Santa Barbara Public Library, overseeing programming, outreach, collections, communications, and patron services. Though she migrated west to California’s central coast, a part of her heart will always be in her hometown of Lawrence, Kansas, where she was previously a collection development librarian at Lawrence Public Library. She approaches readers’ advisory like a sommelier – she’s WSET level 2 trained wine enthusiast in addition to being an avid and eclectic reader.
